Pixel art in Minecraft is an image rebuilt so each planned pixel becomes one block. You do not need a mod to make it: a clear source image, a converted grid, enough building space, and the required blocks are sufficient. Mods and schematic files can speed up large Java Edition projects, but the same plan can always be built manually.
For a first mural, choose a subject with a clear silhouette and a small color range. Simple icons, retro sprites, flags, and bold character faces are easier than photographs or scenes full of gradients. The objective is to finish a recognizable build while learning how scale, palette, and row counting work together.

Step 1 — Choose and prepare your image
Pick an image with bold colors and clear edges. Logos, characters, and simple icons convert more predictably than detailed photos. Crop tightly around the subject, remove captions that will become unreadable, and replace a busy background with transparency or one solid color. A clean source prevents compression noise from becoming hundreds of unnecessary color changes.
Shrink the image on screen before converting it. If the subject stops being recognizable as a thumbnail, identify which features disappeared. You can simplify the artwork, strengthen its contrast, or plan a wider output. Do these edits at the image stage, where they take minutes, rather than improvising after a wall is half complete.
Step 2 — Generate the block grid
Upload the prepared image to the generator and choose an output width. Try 32 blocks for a simple icon or 48 to 64 for a first character portrait. The height follows the image's aspect ratio, so verify both dimensions before continuing. Doubling a square design from 32 to 64 blocks wide increases the maximum area from 1,024 to 4,096 blocks.
Choose a block palette and turn on the grid overlay. Concrete produces strong, flat color fields; wool is softer and often practical in survival; terracotta provides muted tones. More colors are not automatically better. Restricting near-duplicate colors can create cleaner edges and a much simpler shopping list.
Step 3 — Review the preview before collecting blocks
Inspect the preview both zoomed in and from a distance. At high zoom, look for isolated specks, broken lines, and single cells that weaken a curve. At normal viewing size, check whether the silhouette and important features still read clearly. If text has closed up or a face looks unrecognizable, revise the size, crop, or palette and generate a new version.
Treat automatic matching as a draft. Replacing a stray cell with its neighbor's color can make an outline more consistent. Save or download only the final grid. If the reference and material list come from different attempts, their block counts will disagree even when the images appear similar.
Step 4 — Measure the site and gather materials
Measure a rectangle equal to the generated width and height. Leave extra space on every side for access, borders, or lighting. Decide which direction the mural faces and mark the viewer's left and right. This avoids mirroring the plan when you build from behind a wall or approach it from the opposite side.
Open the block shopping list and collect each material before construction. Convert totals into stacks by dividing by 64 and round up. Bring extra copies of the most common colors for errors, and keep scaffolding or temporary markers visually distinct from every color in the artwork. In survival, change an impractical palette before gathering rather than making untracked substitutions during the build.
Step 5 — Establish anchors and build in sections
Mark all four corners, the center line, and guide intervals every five or ten blocks. Recount the outer dimensions before filling any color. Place recognizable anchors—such as eyes, the top of a symbol, or the widest points of a silhouette—to confirm that the scale and orientation agree with the reference.
For a small project, build from the bottom upward one row at a time. Read each row as runs of color, such as five black, eight red, and three white, then verify the total width. For a large project, use ten-by-ten sections and check the boundary of each section before moving on. Step back regularly; close counting finds placement errors, while distance reveals design problems.
Step 6 — Check, light, and finish the mural
Compare the completed build with the ungridded preview from its intended viewing point. Look for shifted diagonals, broken outlines, and blocks that appear unexpectedly dark because of the environment. Correct structural mistakes first, then decide whether a deliberate manual color adjustment improves the design.
Remove temporary markers and scaffolding, make the viewing area safe, and add lighting around the artwork if players will see it at night. Light the surface evenly rather than placing bright blocks inside the image without updating the plan. Take a final screenshot and keep the grid and material list for future repairs or rebuilding on another world.
Manual grid, Litematica, or WorldEdit?
A manual grid works in both Java and Bedrock Edition and requires no installation. It is the best way to learn the process and is reliable for small and medium builds. Troubleshooting your first build
If every block after one point is shifted, find the earliest row-length mismatch instead of compensating later. If the counts are correct but the image is muddy, reduce the number of similar colors. If important details disappeared, increase resolution or simplify the source. If the project is too expensive, reduce both dimensions; a modest width reduction can remove thousands of block positions.
Finishing a smaller clean mural teaches more than abandoning an oversized one. Record what slowed you down—materials, counting, scaffolding, or source-image cleanup—and change one variable on the next project. That turns the generated plan into a repeatable building workflow rather than a one-time reference.
