What is a block palette?
A block palette is the set of blocks you allow when building pixel art. The palette decides the colors available to match your image — a wider, more vivid palette captures detail; a tighter palette gives a cohesive, stylized look.
Common palettes and when to use them
Each block family has a different feel:
- Concrete — 16 vibrant flat colors; the all-round best for pixel art
- Wool — similar range, slightly softer; flammable in survival
- Terracotta & glazed — muted earth tones and patterns for backgrounds
- Map colors — used for map art so the in-game map renders accurately

Generate at least two previews before committing: one with a narrow, practical palette and one with a broader set. Compare them at normal viewing size, then compare the material lists. If the wider palette adds several rare blocks but changes only a few isolated cells, the practical version is usually the better building plan.
Concrete for bold, clean graphics
Concrete provides sixteen saturated dye colors with relatively quiet faces. It suits logos, flags, icons, cartoon characters, and any mural that depends on broad flat areas. A concrete-only plan is easy to understand because every selected color belongs to one consistent block family, and the finished surface reads cleanly at both close and distant viewing ranges.
Its limitation is subtle color. Portrait skin, faded backgrounds, and natural shadows may collapse into a few strong steps. Instead of enabling every block immediately, add selected terracotta or wool shades where the concrete preview loses an important feature. Keep the strong concrete outline and accents while using muted blocks only where they improve the image.
Wool for renewable survival builds
Wool covers the familiar sixteen dye colors and can be renewable when you maintain dyed sheep. Its visible texture softens large areas, which can suit retro sprites and cozy builds. For a project requiring many stacks of the same color, an established wool supply may be more convenient than collecting and hardening equivalent concrete.
Wool is flammable, so consider the environment and server protections before using it near fire or lava. Its colors are not identical to concrete even when the names match. Generate the plan with the actual wool palette rather than collecting wool from a concrete preview, because changing families can alter which shade is closest to the source.
Terracotta and specialty blocks for muted tones
Terracotta's dye variants are generally earthier and less saturated than concrete or wool. That makes them valuable for skin-adjacent colors, wood, soil, stone, warm shadows, and vintage artwork. The names can be misleading if you expect a bright digital hue, so judge the block face in the preview rather than selecting by label alone.
Specialty blocks can fill gaps in a palette, but each brings a tradeoff. Some have strong patterns, animation, orientation, gravity, transparency, rarity, or changing appearance. Include them only after checking the face that will point toward the viewer and the quantity required. A mathematically close color is not useful if the block cannot be placed consistently in the intended wall.
Map-color palettes are a separate workflow
Map art must be converted with map colors because a filled map records a defined top-surface color instead of reproducing a block's full texture. Several visually different blocks can create the same base map color. That lets a builder choose a more practical material, but it also means a normal wall-art palette cannot predict the final item-frame image.
Select map mode before generating, use the required 128 by 128 footprint for a single tile, and follow the plan's flat or height-shaded method consistently. If you change the suggested block to another one with the same intended map color, test a small area in the relevant edition before replacing thousands of positions.
Control palette size and eliminate noise
A broad palette reduces numeric color error but can create one-off block substitutions across smooth areas. Those specks make the grid harder to read and the material list harder to gather. Start with the fewest families that cover the subject, then add a color when it restores a meaningful boundary, highlight, or facial feature—not merely because it is slightly closer to one source pixel.
Review isolated cells at high zoom. If a single block differs from every neighbor and does not strengthen the outline, replace it with the surrounding color. Also check the thumbnail view: if two near-identical materials merge at distance, combining them will simplify the build without changing the visible result.
Choose a survival-friendly palette
Filter blocks according to your actual world, farms, and travel options. Record the total for each color and identify the bottleneck material before building. Large background colors deserve special scrutiny because a small per-block inconvenience becomes a major task across dozens of stacks. A slightly less accurate abundant block can be the right design choice when it makes completion realistic.
After substitutions, regenerate both the preview and shopping list. Do not swap materials casually during construction, because repeated changes can flatten contrast or leave the saved reference out of sync. Keep the final palette with the project files so repairs, collaborators, and future expansions use the same block decisions.
